Out with the Old....

After much navel gazing, I have opted to replace the engine in my car.  I really do not want to take on a car payment right now.

Here is the old one:

  1. Where do you stand on this now?? I had my engine rebuilt at the end of last year, and still have issues....I am dumping my '02 Nissan Altima. DONE with Nissan, and feel your pain!

  2. Well, the new engine, so far, has been running flawlessly. I'm not in a place to buy a new car, so I'm planning to drive this one basically until it dies. At this moment, though, the repair seems to have been worth it. Though, the entire process was very arduous and in the end Nissan North America didn't help me at all. It was the local dealership that cut me a deal to do the work. But I have no confidence in Nissan as a corporation. It's frustrating because they make some of the nicest looking cars out there, and the feature packages can't be beat, but I'm not so sure I'll buy another. It's a shame, we very brand loyal prior to this experience.

    Best of luck to you.

  3. Thank you for doing this blog. I've just recently discovered that my 2003 Nissan Altima is having the same issues as you, and so many others have put on websites and blogs. I'm sickened by this. I too JUST paid off my car and am now looking at spending thousands more to fix it, or dump it and get another car. I'm very torn about what to do as I've read that people who fix the engine end up having the same problems with another bad engine eventually. Clearly a class action suit needs to be lodged against Nissan. But who has the money, time and energy to get that going? THIS IS TRULY UNBELIEVABLE!!!

  4. Update on my situation: I got rid of mine. I am the proud owner of a Jetta 2.0 Turbo, and I LOVE it! I am so relieved to have that Nissan out of my driveway. It was sucking oil and killing me on $100-200 repairs at least once a month.

Eesh! Nissan sucks! I tried sooo hard to love them. The car was beautiful to look at, but I've never owned a worse car! Never again! In fact, I'm so in love with German engineering right now that I think I may never buy anything but VW again!

Anonymous, wish you lots of luck in settling your issues. I kept mine too long...my advice to you is to get rid of the poison now before it's really unsellable!!

    Good wishes to you.

  5. I am now dealing with the same issues on my 2003 Nissan Altima. I am afraid that I would loose my money, if I rebuilt or got a new engine. I am not in the position to get a new car. With only one income and being a single parent of two, there aren't many options for me. However, I read that the same engine for the 04 and 05 model, has been recalled. Isn't the engine from 02-05 the same? How did 02 and 03 get skipped, but 04 and 05 got recalled? I am frustrated and to think I was promoting Nissan and considering getting the newer model of Altima, with my income tax. Not going to do it. I think I better sale, trade or get rid of this mess and go elsewhere.

  6. My Nissan engine piston punched through my block. I was told the I was driving with hole in my man-cat That's manifold catalytic converter and one. For so long that the engine lost pressure that Messed up the oil pressure pump which led to the piston being offset which led to puncturing the engine block. Good cars but not happy with the engine. I got the car for $2,600 the car is worth more, now I feel like I'm paying full price for the car getting the engine is going to run me with labor $1,900 that's 4,500. The price I paid for the car and the engine together. Why..?

  7. I am not a Nissan fan. We just finished dumping a bunch of time and money over the last six months into a 2002 Altima 3.5SE with 167K miles. If it hadn't been for the fact that I know how to do most work on cars, we would have been looking at a $6-7K bill and most likely a replacement vehicle - wouldn't have been a Nissan, that's for sure. Yes, a few items on the list were the infamous catalytic converters:

    - Front struts
    - Inner and outer tie rod ends
    - Valve covers and gaskets
    - Spark plugs
    - Transmission speed sensor
    - Fuel pump basket (pump, regulator, filter, and float)
    - All three catalytic converters
    - All four O2 sensors
    - Rear wheel bearings
